Background

It is believed that most people with depression may have an imbalance of serotonin in their brain. As a result, existing antidepressants available today are focused on increasing serotonin levels to relieve depression symptoms. Unfortunately, these treatments are not always effective for everyone.

This research study is investigating whether a different ‘type’ of depression exists. This different ‘type’ of depression is defined as having symptoms caused by an imbalance of chemicals other than serotonin. If another type of depression exists, specific treatments can be developed to address these imbalances and help people who do not benefit from existing antidepressants.

This study seeks people who are currently suffering from depression. Participants are required to attend 3 study visits at the research site over 3 months and will be compensated up to $600 for participating in this study. Depending on individual needs, participants may be reimbursed for mileage, cab/train/airfare up front, and/or be provided a hotel stay to be able to attend study visits.

Your Rights

• If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you may withdraw at any time.
• Your records relating to this study and any other information received will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by law.
• Qualified health professionals will monitor your health as it relates to the study.

Who Can Participate?

• Men and women aged 18 – 65 years old.
• Currently experiencing symptoms of depression (for example low mood, trouble concentrating and sleeping, lack of energy).
• Have not been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
• Willing to undergo 2 Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans.
• Able to attend 3 study visits at the research site over 3 months.
